A Few Nights in Jail at the Heartbreak Hotel

A story about who gets lucky and who does not. The kind of questions we in my family call questions for god

I wrote this a while back thinking about the choices we make, and where they lead us. It’s a story about me, Harold Stokes, a tough guy from the neighborhood, and another guy I never met, one named Alvin Krolick. Krolick was the guy who inspired the song that Elvis Presley sang about the Heartbreak Hotel. All three of us spent time locked up in the little jail at the Albany Park Precinct in Chicago. It’s the place they called the Heartbreak Hotel.

A Few Nights in Jail at the Heartbreak Hotel is from my book Stories I’ve Been Meaning to Tell You If you like this story there’s a lot more waiting for you there.
